Leeds Ultrasound Student Handbook
Welcome
Welcome to the Leeds Ultrasound Student Handbook (LUSH).
It is with great pleasure to introduce you to this new ultrasound e-book developed by members of the undergraduate ultrasound working group at the School of Medicine at Leeds, UK.
In 2016, we became the first UK medical school to ‘take the first step’ towards embedding the learning of ultrasound into all years of our undergraduate medical curriculum. Our intention was to enhance aspects of our existing teaching programme e.g. in anatomy and traditional clinical skills training as well as to provide an opportunity to equip students with a new practical skill which they will be likely to use in their future working practice.
This e-book was conceived to aid the understanding of the application of ultrasound in clinical practice. It is aimed at medical undergraduates, newly qualified doctors and teaching faculty but is equally relevant to allied health related professional disciplines such as nursing, paramedics and physician associates. We do not expect that our undergraduates will be fully competent in all of the areas presented, but more that this provides a platform to ground their learning. We have focussed on ‘point-of-care’ ultrasound skills as these appear most relevant to the busy junior doctor. The content is not exhaustive and therefore we have provided links to further resources as required.
We offer the book as an accessible and open resource which we hope will stimulate interest and evolve into a well utilised ‘go to’ resource.
