Welcome to the University of Leeds and the your elective. The information provided on this website is to help you transition from your home medical school (whether it be in the UK or overseas) to the University of Leeds elective programme. This site will provide you with a range of information including University of Leeds campus maps, hospital maps, transport information and top tips from previous students and much more.
The city of Leeds has a lot of exciting events and opportunities to experience life in the UK. Do explore Leeds and Yorkshire alongside your elective obligations.
At the beginning of your elective block on Day One students should meet as below where there will be a couple of short inductions. This is an ideal time to meet with other elective students making friends, exchanging numbers/emails using social media if you wish.
Meet with the medical electives co-ordinator in Room 7.04, Level 7, Worsley Building.
Short welcome and introduction by the Electives Lead/Co-ordinator.
Colleagues from the Undergraduate Hub will then accompany you to the Postgraduate Centre in the LGI where you will receive a short induction and receive your NHS card. The NHS card permits you to use the shuttle bus between LGI, St James’s and Chapel Allerton.
For the duration of your elective students will be registered on the non-degree medical course at the University of Leeds. Therefore, during the first week of your elective you are required to complete University registration and collect your Student ID card from the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff building. You will need to present your passport (and visa if overseas student) and registration certificate (which can be saved on your phone). Your University SID gives you access to the University libraries and use of University computers. If registration is not completed during the first week you may not be allowed to continue with your elective.
Students will then proceed to their ward/department whether in the LGI, St James’s or Chapel Allerton as per their ward reporting instructions. Hub colleagues will be available for any questions and directions.
Students should print off an Electives logbook. And bring with you on your first day. Each session will need to be signed by your supervisor and submitted to the electives co-ordinator at the end of your elective.
Clothing must be smart. Male students should wear trousers (not jeans) and a shirt (with a collar). Female students should wear a skirt or smart trousers and a blouse/shirt. Lab coats are not required.
If you have any issues of concern or questions, please contact us. The electives team looks forward to meeting you and we hope that you have a great elective at the University of Leeds.
